AG BELL NEVADA is UP and RUNNING
Bet you didn’t think of Las Vegas, the Entertainment Capital of the World, as actually having people with hearing loss, that would benefit from an AG Bell Chapter? Well, it does… and now, Nevada is up and running, with its’ own AG Bell Chapter. Our first meeting carried the theme: “Try Walking in my Shoes” an analogy that compared shoes and a personal walk with hearing loss. “Which shoe are you wearing? Raise your hand. Is it brand new, worn in, or tattered?” asked Kim Sorenson, Co-President. She concluded, “As parents, professionals, or HI individuals we have a unique, special, and privileged opportunity to travel on a road that is only known to a few. Remember, you’re not walking alone; we’ve all worn or will wear, one of those shoes. Some of us are running, some walking, some skipping, some crawling and I bet, some are even stopped. Whatever shoes you are wearing or pace you are traveling… what matters most, we’re a team, and we help each other.“
Over fifty attendees, heard from Senator Terry Care of Nevada, who helped write and support Assembly Bill 250 for newborn screening of hearing, prior to discharge from the hospital. An AG Bell DVD, Hear the Difference, was projected for all to view, along with power point slides, from CNI’s Colorado Kids Camp. Several points were outlined on membership benefits, by Co-President, Steve Sorenson, and our new chapter website www.agbellnv.com was introduced. Some of our moms personally shared on the shoes they wore or now wear, in being a mom of a hearing impaired or oral deaf child. It was a very exciting night, and we left with the feeling that our Chapter is going to be a premier organization for Oral Deaf Education, resources, and support in Nevada. So if you come to Las Vegas, with an opportunity to place a bet, the only bet I’d encourage you to place, is the one for AG Bell. For sure, it’s a “Win / Win” situation, creating a "Deaf Oral Community" that will change lives, Las Vegas, Nevada, and the world forever!
