AG Bell Nevada, Co-President
Named to National Board of Directors
The Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (AG Bell) recently announced the appointment of three new members to its Board of Directors for the 2009-2012 term.
Patricia "Corrine" Altman, Holly Clark and Catharine McNally were appointed at the recent AG Bell Board of Directors meeting November 7-8, 2009, in Washington, D.C. Altman and Clark are parents of adult children who are deaf or hard of hearing who listen and talk. McNally most recently served as a junior counselor for AG Bell's Leadership Opportunities for Teens program, and has a profound hearing loss.
"These individuals represent the core of the AG Bell community in that they are tireless advocates for those who choose a listening and spoken language outcome," said AG Bell President John R. "Jay" Wyant. "Their contributions to the organization, its mission and its membership are immeasurable and they are outstanding representatives of the volunteer leadership."

N*COURAGE*MINT was formed out of a mentorship program with John Tracy Clinic (www.jtc.org). We sought this mentorship based on their years of service to families, specifically parents, who have children with hearing loss. N*COURAGE*MINT is based mainly on creating a safe and healthy environment for parents to understand the facts and feelings surrounding parenting a child with hearing loss. This kind of support is needed because more than 90% of children born with hearing loss are born to hearing parents. Hearing loss is a new experience for these parents. Educating and supporting parents helps them become true advocates for their children no matter what language philosophy they choose. N*COURAGE*MINT offers parents and their extended family an opportunity to meet each other, share their journey, and helps to develop a strong foundation for each participant. N*COURAGE*MINT hopes that a strong foundation will better equip each parent; individually, as a couple, as family, and in parent - professional and parent - teacher relationships.
On August 22, 2009 more than 200 people, mostly members of The Nevada Chapter of the Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (AG Bell NV) met with Representative Dina Titus (NV, 3rd District) at an early morning brunch, to thank her for her support of legislation that would help address the lack of financial assistance for people who need hearing aids. The hearing aid tax credit legislation would provide a $500 tax credit towards the purchase of a hearing aid for children and for people 55 and older. Medicare excludes hearing aid coverage, as do most private insurance policies. As a result, nearly two thirds of people who do not seek hearing aid treatment report that cost is a primary barrier.
Randi King of Las Vegas stated that hearing aids have had a major impact on her life. “Hearing aids are critical to me and totally necessary to do well at my work, at home, communicating with family and friends, coworkers, and the rest of the world.” Randi, a teacher with the Clark County School District mentioned that she knows there are a lot of parents who cannot afford the hearing aids for their children.
Dr. Nichole Sheldon an audiologist working for CCSD stated that she sees situations where children were identified with hearing loss at birth and families cannot afford the hearing aids until school age or beyond. “They're in the fourth and fifth grade,” states Dr. Sheldon, “and they’re getting their first set of hearing aids. By that age they’ve missed out on a huge critical period for language development.”
Seven year old, Samuel Grant of Henderson was the youngest of the speakers to share on how hearing aids have helped. “They help me hear and understand what people say,” Samuel said. “If I did not have them, I think I would fail in school. I do not want that to happen. I am proud to have my hearing aids. I am able to enjoy my friends and education. I love my hearing aids and not just because they glow in the dark. I want all hearing-impaired kids to have a good life just like me.”
Lize Kragh of Las Vegas, who has worn hearing aids since she was two years old, works for the Nevada Hard of Hearing Advocacy Center. Ms. Kragh stated that many of her late deafened clients sometimes do not have hearing aids and ear molds that fit them properly. They cannot make the necessary changes because of cost. A tax credit would help make the necessary changes possible.
The 200 plus people in attendance, is currently a record nationally, showing support for the bill. It obviously shows the concern and importance of the tax credit for families and individuals with hearing loss that need hearing aids.
Rep. Titus is a co-sponsor of the hearing aid tax credit act (HR1646), and she also supports an important provision in the House of Representatives health care reform bill that would mandate insurance coverage for children who need hearing aids. The AG Bell members are urging Rep. Titus to push for passage of the provisions when she returns to Washington.

Every family experiences fundamental changes with the diagnosis of hearing loss or other special needs in a child. Some families with children who are deaf or hard of hearing bond together to help the child; others seem to fall apart under the weight of the additional stress that the hearing loss entails. Often the majority of a family’s energy is devoted to meeting the deaf child’s special needs. When this happens, couples can drift apart and siblings can act out or become increasingly alienated. Additionally, though many parents report personal growth and a redefinition of their life’s purpose, years of stress can create a burden on their general well being, creating problems with their health and daily functioning. This workshop will attempt to address the question:
What about the rest of us?
We will explore ways in which each family member’s individual experience of adaptation and grief in the months and years following a child’s diagnosis of hearing loss can intersect with that of the other members in ways which are either helpful and healing or discouraging and detrimental. We will identify strategies, which partners and parents can use to begin to repair relationships within the nuclear and extended family, which are weakened or damaged by the unique stress in their lives. Parents will consider how to care for themselves as they balance the burden of many competing needs, including their own.
The workshop will focus on:
Mary Beth Goring, M.A., MFT, is a marriage and family therapist who has spent the last twenty-one years working with families of young deaf children at John Tracy Clinic. She facilitates support groups for English and Spanish-speaking parents, as well as school-aged siblings, provides individual and family counseling, and teaches a graduate level class in working with families. Ms. Goring serves as the Director of Consultation Services of John Tracy Clinic, and has traveled throughout the U.S., Latin America, and Spain providing trainings for parents and professionals in topics such as family relationships, the function of parents’ grief, working with parents, and support groups.
